The Problem With Your Factory System

AFM. DOD. MDS.
A Known Failure.

GM's DOD/AFM and Chrysler's MDS systems destroy lifters, wipe cam lobes, and cause catastrophic engine failure in cars, trucks, and SUVs — often without warning.

  • TICK
Ticking or tapping at idle — Early warning of collapsed AFM/DOD/MDS lifters. Do not wait.
  • P030
P0300 misfires & cylinder codes — A collapsed lifter kills the cylinder.
  • CAM
Wiped cam lobes — Failed lifters tear your camshaft apart.
  • MPG
Fuel economy dropping — A failed deactivation system hurts the MPG it was built to help.
  • CEL
Check engine light will not clear — Codes return because the root cause is not fixed.

People come to Cape Fear Cams when they are tired of ticking lifters, weak dealer fixes, reused bolts, and canned tunes. These are the kinds of results and feedback that keep the schedule full.

★★★★★

Jason fixed my Silverado the right way after another shop tried to shortcut it. No more lifter tick, no more misfire, and the truck drives better than it ever has. The tune is clean and the cam sounds perfect.

I brought in my Yukon Denali with a collapsed lifter and left with a full DOD delete, fresh cam, and a tune that feels factory but stronger everywhere. Jason knows these GM platforms inside and out.

★★★★★

My Ram had the classic HEMI tick and I wanted it fixed once and done right. The MDS delete solved the problem, the tune is smooth, and the truck finally feels reliable again. Worth the drive to Wilmington.

GM Cam Swap SEO

Silverado Camshaft, DOD Delete, AFM Delete, and GM Lifter Failure Repair

If you are searching for a Silverado camshaft upgrade, Silverado DOD delete, Silverado AFM delete, Yukon DOD delete, Tahoe AFM delete, Sierra cam swap, or 5.3 lifter failure repair, Cape Fear Cams is built around exactly that work. We handle OEM-style non-DOD cam conversions, aftermarket truck cams, full top-end cam packages, valvetrain upgrades, and custom tuning for GM LS and LT platforms.

Silverado Camshaft Upgrades

From stock-replacement non-DOD camshafts to aftermarket truck cams, we build Silverado 4.8, 5.3, 6.0, and 6.2 packages that match the vehicle, the use case, and the tune.

Silverado DOD / AFM Deletes

We remove the failure-prone AFM hardware correctly with lifters, trays, block-off parts, valley cover changes when needed, and calibration that fully disables the system in the ECU.

Yukon and Tahoe Lifter Failure

Yukon, Yukon XL, Tahoe, and Suburban 5.3 and 6.2 engines commonly suffer collapsed lifters and cam lobe damage. We fix the root cause instead of masking the symptoms.

Chevy and GMC Cam Swaps

Chevy Silverado, GMC Sierra, Tahoe, Yukon, Suburban, Avalanche, Camaro, and other GM platforms all need the right parts mix for a clean, reliable cam swap and tune.

GM Tuning and Driveability

Cam swaps and delete jobs still need clean startup behavior, transmission tuning, idle control, and road manners. Custom HP Tuners work is part of finishing the job the right way.

OEM Parts and Known Fixes

We use traceable GM and Mopar components, correct torque-to-yield replacements, and parts combinations that make sense for real daily drivers, tow rigs, and street builds.

Common searches that lead customers here include Silverado 5.3 lifter failure, Yukon 6.2 DOD delete, Tahoe AFM delete near me, Chevy cam swap Wilmington NC, LS truck cam package, LT cam swap tuning, and GM cylinder deactivation problems. The homepage now answers those searches with visible content instead of a hidden keyword block.

For 2007-2013 Gen IV trucks and SUVs, a true DOD delete means more than simply swapping a camshaft. It means replacing the lifters, installing the right trays, deleting the AFM hardware, updating the valley cover where required, and recalibrating the ECU so the engine no longer depends on the failure-prone system. For 2014-2018 Gen V trucks and SUVs, that can also mean VVT lockout and the extra labor tied to access and reassembly.

If your Chevy Silverado, GMC Sierra, Tahoe, Yukon, or Suburban has a ticking noise, random misfire, rough idle, or repeat check-engine light tied to lifter collapse, this is exactly the kind of repair and upgrade path we built Cape Fear Cams around. You can go back stock with a non-DOD cam, or step into a performance camshaft package and leave with the tune finished in-house.

Popular GM Questions

Do you do Silverado DOD deletes?

Yes. We build Silverado DOD and AFM delete packages for the common 4.8, 5.3, 6.0, and 6.2 GM truck engines, including OEM-style non-DOD cam options.

Can you fix Yukon lifter failure?

Yes. Yukon and Yukon XL lifter collapse is one of the most common GM problems we see, especially on AFM and DOD engines.

Do you offer tuning with the cam swap?

Yes. Custom HP Tuners calibration is part of finishing the package so the cam swap, delete hardware, and drivability all work together.

Do you only work on performance builds?

No. We do stock-feel non-DOD cam conversions, full delete repairs, and aggressive aftermarket cam packages depending on the customer goal.

Symptoms & Codes That Send Customers to Cape Fear Cams

If you're Googling "ticking lifter Silverado," "P0300 Ram 1500 HEMI," "Tahoe AFM cam damage," "Yukon random misfire 5.3," "Charger HEMI tick," or "Jeep Grand Cherokee lifter failure," this is the list you're seeing in scan tool apps and forum posts. Every one of these symptoms has the same underlying problem on AFM, DOD, and MDS engines — and the same permanent fix.

Ticking or tapping at idleEarliest and loudest warning of a collapsed AFM, DOD, or MDS lifter. Do not keep driving it. The cam lobe is already taking damage.
Random cylinder misfire — P0300The generic random-misfire code on GM and HEMI engines. When combined with a tick, it's almost always lifter collapse on a deactivating cylinder.
Specific cylinder misfire — P0301–P0308A cylinder-specific misfire narrows it down further. On AFM engines, misfires concentrated on the 1-4-6-7 pattern confirm the deactivating cylinder is the source.
Low oil pressure — P0521Frequently paired with AFM system failures. The oil-pressure-controlled deactivation valves can fail and throw this code alongside misfires.
Wiped cam lobeA collapsed lifter stops riding the cam properly and grinds the lobe flat. Once the lobe is gone, cylinder output drops and you can hear it.
Rough idle after deactivationHarsh re-engagement coming out of 4-cylinder or 4-of-8-cylinder mode is a classic AFM, DOD, and MDS complaint. A delete makes it disappear.
Excessive oil consumptionAFM engines are known for burning oil through worn rings on deactivating cylinders. Sometimes called the "GM oil consumption issue."
Check engine light won't clearIf the underlying mechanical problem isn't fixed, the code comes right back. Clearing the CEL is not a repair.
Poor fuel economyThe cylinder deactivation system was designed to save fuel. When it's broken, it saves nothing and hurts mileage. The delete plus a proper tune gets drivability and MPG back on track.
Reduced engine power / limp modeSevere misfire and low-compression events trigger reduced-engine-power states in GM trucks and Ram HEMIs. Usually tied to the same root cause.
HEMI VVT phaser rattleOn 2009+ 5.7 HEMI vehicles, a VVT phaser rattle at startup often shows up next to MDS-related cam wear. We replace the phaser and chain as part of the cam package.
Gen V LT cold-start rattle2014+ LT1 / L83 / L86 engines can rattle at cold start due to oil-pressure-related AFM and cam phaser issues. The DOD delete and VVT lockout together cure it.

Common searches that lead customers here include Silverado 5.3 lifter failure, Silverado AFM delete near me, Silverado DOD delete Wilmington NC, Yukon 6.2 DOD delete, Tahoe AFM delete, Suburban lifter failure, GMC Sierra cam swap, Escalade DOD delete, Camaro SS cam swap, LT1 cam and tune, Ram 1500 HEMI lifter failure, Ram MDS delete, Dodge Charger MDS tick, Dodge Challenger cam swap, Jeep Grand Cherokee HEMI lifter failure, Durango MDS delete, Chrysler 300 HEMI tick, and HEMI cam swap with tune. Everything on those search terms is actual work we do in the shop every week — not a list of services we outsource.

For 2007-2013 GM Gen IV trucks and SUVs, a true DOD delete is not just a camshaft swap. It means replacing the lifters with a standard non-deactivating set, installing the correct lifter trays, physically deleting the AFM solenoids and oil-pressure relief valves, updating the valley cover when the platform requires it, and recalibrating the ECU so the engine no longer expects the deactivation system. For 2014-2018 GM Gen V trucks and SUVs, the same applies, plus VVT phaser lockout, AC condenser removal and an R-1234YF recharge on most jobs, and the extra labor tied to front-cover access.

On the HEMI side, the 2009-2012 5.7 work uses a non-MDS camshaft and standard lifters — a straightforward delete that ends the ticking and the deactivation problems at the source. 2013-and-up 5.7 HEMI VVT engines get the Hellcat-spec lifter upgrade as part of our standard package — it is a meaningful upgrade over factory MDS lifters, not a bandage. Cam phaser and timing chain get replaced. MDS is disabled in the ECU with a custom HP Tuners tune that matches your VIN, your fuel octane, your transmission, and whatever other modifications are on the truck. The result: no ticking, no misfires, a clean idle, and a driveability profile that feels like it came from the factory — just better.

If your Chevy Silverado, GMC Sierra, Tahoe, Yukon, Suburban, Avalanche, Camaro, Corvette, Escalade, CTS-V, Ram 1500, Ram 2500, Dodge Charger, Dodge Challenger, Dodge Durango, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Chrysler 300, Chrysler Aspen, Dodge Magnum, or Jeep Commander has a ticking noise, a random misfire, a rough idle, a lingering check-engine light tied to lifter collapse, or a cam lobe that's been wiped clean — this is the kind of repair and upgrade path we built Cape Fear Cams around. Non-DOD OEM cam for a quiet stock-feel result, or an aftermarket cam grind for a real lope and real power. Either way, the tune is written in-house, to your VIN, before the truck leaves the shop.

Common Questions

Do you do Silverado DOD and AFM deletes?

Yes. Silverado 1500 DOD delete, Silverado 5.3 AFM delete, and Silverado 6.2 cam swap work is one of the most common jobs at the shop. OEM parts, full tune, done in-house.

Can you fix Yukon, Tahoe, or Suburban lifter failure?

Yes. Yukon lifter failure, Tahoe AFM collapse, and Suburban DOD failure are handled the same way — OEM-parts DOD delete, new non-deactivating lifters, and a calibration that disables the system in the ECU.

Do you service Ram and Dodge HEMI MDS problems?

Yes. Ram 1500 HEMI lifter failure, Dodge Charger MDS delete, Challenger MDS delete, Durango MDS delete, and Jeep Grand Cherokee HEMI cam swaps. 2013+ VVT trucks get Hellcat lifters standard.

Is tuning included with the cam swap?

Yes. Every package includes custom HP Tuners calibration written in-house to your VIN — idle, spark, fueling, transmission, torque management, and DOD/AFM/MDS fully disabled in the ECU.

What's the difference between DOD, AFM, and MDS?

They're the same idea from three different eras and brands. DOD (Displacement on Demand) and AFM (Active Fuel Management) are GM's cylinder deactivation systems. MDS (Multi-Displacement System) is Chrysler's HEMI version. All three fail the same way — lifter collapse — and all three get fixed the same way.

Can I get a non-performance, stock-feeling cam?

Absolutely. Many customers only want the deactivation system gone and the ticking stopped. An OEM-style non-DOD or non-MDS cam gives you a clean, quiet, stock-feeling idle with zero AFM or MDS behavior.

Do I need a tune after just a cam swap?

Yes. Every cam change requires recalibration — even a stock-spec swap. Without a tune, idle quality, transmission behavior, and drivability all suffer. The tune is not optional.

What parts do you use?

100% OEM GM and Mopar parts by part number. No Amazon lifter kits, no mystery gaskets, no reused TTY head bolts. Every component is traceable and warrantied.

How long does the job take?

Once parts arrive (typically 5-7 days from deposit), most cam swap and delete jobs are a 3-5 day turnaround including tuning and road test. Complex Gen V and HEMI VVT jobs can run longer.

Do you offer a warranty?

Yes. Every install is backed by a 12-month / 12,000-mile warranty. Fully licensed and insured LLC.

How far will customers drive to you?

Regulars come from Wilmington, Leland, Hampstead, Jacksonville, Raleigh, Fayetteville, Goldsboro, Myrtle Beach SC, and all across eastern NC. Worth the drive when the alternative is a dealer reusing lifter trays.
